The Safe Mobility for Life Coalition partnered with the Florida Public Transportation Association to celebrate National Dump the Pump Day a bit early. We call the event “Transit is Golden” and the idea is to provide a free interactive event with a local senior center to enjoy the their community without the attachment of their car.
The first event took place June 1 at the Mary L. Singleton Senior Center in Jacksonville, FL. The day began with presentations from our partners including, the FDOT district office, the Vice President of JTA, and Walk Wise. With over 90 attendees, we chose 10 lucky raffle winners to continue on a tour of the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens by way of the local JTA service. After a tour of the gardens we were offered an exemplary lunch at the museum cafe followed by a tour of the contemporary and classic art sections.
Day 2 brought us to Orlando, FL at the Beardall Senior Center. There we heard from Lynx, SunRail, local FDOT district reps, and Bike/Walk Center Florida. Our raffle winners continued on the Lynx service to the central terminal where we made a quick and easy transfer to the SunRail station. From there we rode the train to Winter Park where we enjoyed a beautiful spread by the local Panera Bread Company followed by a tour of the Morse Museum of American Art. Many of our riders had never visited the museum and never considered how easy it would be to return using their local transportation.
Both days were equal in culture and excitement and we look forward to bringing a Transit is Golden event to a community near you!
